In a move that can only be described as dehumanizing, John Rustad, leader of the BC Conservatives, announced his campaign in front of an encampment of people experiencing homelessness. This wasn’t just a backdrop for his political ambitions—it was a blatant exploitation of vulnerable community members for his own gain.
By choosing this location, Rustad is treating these people like zoo animals, using their plight as a prop to garner attention and support. This is not only insensitive but also deeply disrespectful who are just trying to find somewhere to sleep. It reduces their complex and painful experiences to a political spectacle.
What makes this even more egregious is Rustad’s simultaneous attack on programs designed to help these very individuals. He wants to eliminate the safe drug supply, forcing people with substance use disorders to rely on the illicit, toxic mystery drug supply. This plan doesn’t just endanger lives—it puts more money in the pockets of drug dealers and international drug terrorists.
Furthermore, by opposing the housing density requirements introduced by Premier David Eby and the BC NDP, and by fighting against tenant protections like rent control, Rustad will push more people into homelessness and make the housing crisis worse . His policies and rhetoric undermine the support systems that provide essential aid to the homeless community. By cutting funding and opposing initiatives that are already making real progress.
Unhoused people deserve dignity, respect, and real solutions—not to be used as a backdrop in a political photo op.
